Re: Tesla's Ambient Heat Engine revisted

Not sure what your saying, but my point was basically that the gas is compressed making it hotter. Expanded making it colder. Work is taken out making it colder, work put in making it hotter. Even without a displacer, these events take place at different times changing the state of the working fluid...

Re: Carnot was being too generous

"thermal-to-electrical" efficiency includes, presumably, conversion loses, mechanical transmission loses, and depends at least in part on the generator efficiency? Admittedly the "overall system efficiency" of even a 100% efficient engine would be very low for a coal fired plant ...

Re: Tesla's Ambient Heat Engine revisted

Atmospheric pressure across the entire globe varies very little from 14.7 psi Good point. However that is exactly why we have wind - air mass "moving itself" in order to equalise _pressure_ differences caused (largely/entirely?) by temperature differences. Which rather brings me back to t...

Re: Tesla's Ambient Heat Engine revisted

...The Otto cycle proved that compression could easily increase output, but the headbanger at the time was that it also could increase efficiency, and this took a long time to sort out... Re: The TRUTH? η = 1 – (Qc / Qh) = 1 – (Tc / Th)

The added energy has increased pressure, but temperature? Possibly, but this is apparently not essential. So how, or in what way is the engine "running on" i.e. powered by a temperature difference? I think this is the unicorn forest Matt always talks about. Explain the mechanism where pre...

Re: The TRUTH? η = 1 – (Qc / Qh) = 1 – (Tc / Th)

But Tom, you can't deny that Stirling engines can run on hot and cold temperature diffentials can you? What is actually going on? Take away the extraneous trappings and look at what is actually happening with the working fluid and piston. You have a piston. Trapped air on one side, open atmosphere ...

Re: The TRUTH? η = 1 – (Qc / Qh) = 1 – (Tc / Th)

To add to the above. A Stirling engine, much like a heat pump or refrigerator, at least in part CREATES a temperature differential, or perhaps MAINTAINS the given temperature differential, it does not "run on" the temperature differential. To say the engine "runs on a temperature diff...
