Re: Sterling(beta) refuses to work at all after 7 builds.. H

I also read on one forum that said normal electric motors you might have lying around the house, will usually need a diode removed Inorder to work this way due to most electric motors having a safeguard for reverse current. In other words, most of them have a "one way valve" or "reed&...

Re: Sterling(beta) refuses to work at all after 7 builds.. H

I think I get the concept. Kinda like the striling, trial and error! I played with a amp meter and a few simple electric motors I had lying around. I never could get any volt or current back thru the wires with a brisk finger spin, not even a spike. Idk if the motors may be the wrong type or somethi...

Re: Sterling(beta) refuses to work at all after 7 builds.. H

That is interesting. So, fixed magnet motor+spin=output but if brushless is more like and alternator than if seems that would work better. I guess scale plays a roll in why not.

Re: Sterling(beta) refuses to work at all after 7 builds.. H

Well, if you put power in an alternator will it spin like an electric motor?

Re: Sterling(beta) refuses to work at all after 7 builds.. H

I thought about doing that actually but what confuses me if the "generator/motor" how can you tell if an electric motor will produce power in the opposite direction. Usually power is put in and spin is put out. I was thinking of building a larger version and using a car alternator.

Re: Sterling(beta) refuses to work at all after 7 builds.. H

Super old post bro. My method worked really well. I have managed 703rpm with a tin cam engine so don't try to sass on here mr newbie. I made the engine without plans and without true measurements(ruler) All by hand with zero knowlage of the science. I figured the displacer drop and cam throw distanc...

Re: Sterling(beta) refuses to work at all after 7 builds.. H

I know your tired of hearing it, but could the diaphragm be too small if its swelling just not quite enuf to push the rod on over.the balloon only has extra "pulling" tension against the crank when its not being heated. Also, I know you need a counter weight but does it need to be placed t...

Re: Sterling(beta) refuses to work at all after 7 builds.. H

Correct, I guess Im just stubborn. I know his model works, most of the thrill for me is making my own work honestly. If I really wanted one right now, I could probably just make the ez sweet tin stirling.

Re: Sterling(beta) refuses to work at all after 7 builds.. H

Hmm, I didn't know it was actually that finicky. I figured the measurements would be slightly different. So, basically I just took two tin cans and attached a 90' PVC almost at the very top of one. Then I made my displacer 2 1/2 inches thick because the inside of the can to the top of the PVC pipe i...

Re: Sterling(beta) refuses to work at all after 7 builds.. H

Thank for the info, I was thinking maybe my displacer had too much loose room and was letting the air pass by without this cycle taking effect. I was thinking piston but I guess that why its called a displacer. I was going to even try a solid arm displacer but its more complex for sure. So, Are you ...

Re: Sterling(beta) refuses to work at all after 7 builds.. H

Thanks man, that will work. I have a similar setup on my engine. I'm actually remaking the displacer now with new calculations. My next worry is that my (simple style) rear diaphragm PVC pipe isn't large enuf compared to my displacer.

Re: Sterling(beta) refuses to work at all after 7 builds.. H

Also, does the action of the diaphragm push the crank or does it pull the crank? I seem to get pressure both ways but with the connections I'm using for the pushrods to connect to the crank might not be suitable. I see a lot if people saying to use "electric terminal blocks" but my hardwar...
