Re: Troubleshooting my tin can Stirling

If you disconnect the power piston and pull on the piston a little and then release it ,the piston will shoot inwards fast due to the lower pressure you created by pulling the power piston.
If you don`t have that, the engine has a big airleak somewhere and will not run well.

Re: 100 LB Propane Tank as Main Displacer "Open Source"

theropod2 Please keep in mind I only build 1 walking beam :D I`m not an expert :D In order the make a stirling bigger and powerfull you must make the delivery of heat and cold to the air inside more effective than a simple hotcap. Please read the next journals of people before you: http://ntrs.nasa....

Re: Better engine

I think you are all right. I made the beancan walking beam in my garage with little tools. There are to many variables to make any judgement about the performance. That`s why I`m looking for other engine configurations and I found it. It`s the double actuating 4 cylinder in a cirkel alfa type, where...

Re: Better engine

I mean the ST05-G engine, Made by a german guy.
It is a gamme type engine, but with a lot of dead volume.

Re: Better engine

I know in theory the heating and cooling fases should make the same power ,but with my finger light on the flywheel as friction, I could see the difference. Maybe I made it with some odd dimensions. I think on the 3rd page (1 or 2 years back) of this forum I posted a couple of posts about my engine....

Re: 100 LB Propane Tank as Main Displacer "Open Source"

The problem with bigger engines is to heat or cool the air in the middle of the lets say a propane tank. Air next to the metal will be hot or cold, but not in the middle. Maybe try a very large area with a very short stroke or a small area and a long stroke.

Keep in mind I could be wrong :D

Better engine

Last year I build a walking beam stirling engine and it was running fine. After a long time tweaking and modifications I found out that the walking beam is not the best configuration for making a little power ( I only made the beam to understand the principle of the stirling engine). I did found out...

Last night I did some calculations on my v-type compressor with 63mm piston (2.5 inch) and stroke off 30mm (1.3/16) with a java based calculator from Khirala and got a wopping 16 Watt as a LTD. I got 900+ watt with 15 bar pressure, 1200 degrees C using helium as gas. Offcource this is in a somewhat ...

futher down the line of searching on V-type alpha stirling engines I only got patent sites and drawings in theory, not working models. Can someone direct me in the right way or is this design just not working? Very helpfull is the manuscript -manufacturing and testing of a v-type stirling engine- on...

I just took my v-type compressor apart to look for the possibility to make a v-type stirling and I think it is possible, only replace the high friction bearings and piston seals and bring the rotating mass down. I`m just wondering why there are so few pictures on the net of a v-type engine. I`ve see...

I suggest besides reading books to make a simple walking beam. The hardware can be bought by local hardware stores and supermarket for not to much money and the details are on the internet. Changes are very quick to adjust your engine with your wildest ideas. It helped me to overcome and understand ...

I`ve rebuild the walking beam with very light material and shaped it as a crane structure and used parts of an old vcr for bearings and flywheel. The whole system is now play free and cheerfully turns almost silent @ 170 rpm till the water heats up. I played with the offset/arm on the flywheel en 28...

I cut the displacer in half and added 3 layers of "scotch brite" in the middle to act as a regenerator. The displacer piston is smaller close to the regenerator to lower the flow resistance and I hear a low brushing noise when I spin it by hand, so the air has to go throu the scotch brite....
