Re: Heater & Regenerator Design

I have to agree that as its run it has certainly run in some. I think it has run for about 3 hours now. Tonight i did 2 logged runs. The last of which i managed to get the heater to the highest temperature so far. The result was 20.53 Watts right at the start of the run. I think i have wwhat i need ...

Re: Heater & Regenerator Design

Little update.

Got a little more organised tonight. Data loggger recording etc.

Managed a peak output of 15.3 Watts.

Happy with that.

Re: Heater & Regenerator Design

Excuse the mess.

Short clip as it cooled down.

Re: Heater & Regenerator Design

The plan is to box in the base. At the end of the crank is a gear. The motor / generator will be in a solid housing and the shaft will pass into the main housing to engage the gear. I will seal it with an o ring in the motor housing, so i can still adjust the gear ratio via different pinion gear siz...

Re: Heater & Regenerator Design

I've done away with the need for a crank shaft seal all together. The motor / generator in inside the pressurised volume. I use it to start the engine, then flick a switch over to connect it to my load. Yes i expect the returns from increased pressure to be a lot less than theory. I can see it will ...

Re: Heater & Regenerator Design

I was happy it ran so well. It was my first build so was a little nervous. It's cost me around £300 in parts and materials. I designed it to be fairly modular so I could change various components to try different things later on. I plan to enclose the crank case and pressurise it for the next step. ...

Re: Heater & Regenerator Design

Quick little test run this morning. No water connected so only a short burst as didn't want to get it too hot.

Re: Heater & Regenerator Design

Just a little update and pictures. Managed to put in a few hours the last couple of weeks. Video of power piston, bounces, spins and takes 4-5 minutes to drop and that dry with no oil: https://www.facebook.com/richjbarnett/videos/10154041639446887/ https://www.facebook.com/richjbarnett/videos/101540...

Re: Heater & Regenerator Design

Made a bit more progress this week. Been working on the displacer. Finished the end cap that connects to the pushrod. As i mentioned i am venting the inside of the displacer to the crankcase so i dont get any crush as i start to increase the running pressure. This entailed drilling a 2.5mm diameter ...

Re: Heater & Regenerator Design

Thanks for the info on the steels at high temp. I have for sure been conservative on the design. I have allowed minimum wall thickness of 2.5mm after the heat exchanger slots go in. The external fins i left so thick to allow me to get hold of it in the lathe chuck to open out the bore if needs be an...

Re: Heater & Regenerator Design

Looking to run at 15bar fairly quickly but then maybe more. Yes the wall thickness is fairly thick, i went with the thought i can remove some more easier than add some back. There is also some more material to come out of the bore. It will be having some vertical grooves put in to form an heat excha...

Re: Heater & Regenerator Design

The displacer is totally sealed to the working fluid. The pressure port i am talking about goes down the centre of the push rod and vents to the crank case, which is a sealed case and pressurised. So as i increase pressure the inside of the displacer sees this pressure so i do not get any crushing o...
