Re: Propane burner design

James G. Rizzo also discusses burners in his books on hot air and Stirling Engines, Vol 1 & 2 of "The Stirling Engine Manual", and "Modelling Stirling and Hot Air Engines". Ian S C Been reading rizzo's book. Briefly discusses burner desi...

Propane burner design

Any recomendations for literature on propane burner design?

Re: New flame eater with homemade gear

Thanh, how do you cut such narrow and thin cooling fins? When I try to turn in aluminum a .062 wide gap and .062 fin with a .062 parting tool the fin bends over while cutting. Cut also stalls out lathe and belt slips. With .125 cut and .125 fin I have no problems. Thanks, Sent from my SM-N950U usin...

Re: Gamma Fan #2

I just pick a number and build, well not quite, I wanted a fairly small angle on the con rod, so the 20 mm stroke, this also allows reasonably high revs, and I think a short stroking motor does not need a very large flywheel, this motor uses the fan as it's flywheel, and the blades on that are quit...

Re: Gamma Fan #2

My fan runs at 600rpm to 800rpm on the hot plate of an electric stove, power piston is 30 mm dia X 20 mm stroke, and the ratio is 1.5 : 1. Ian S C Ian, how do yo decide on piston stroke? I've been picking a piston diameter by the available material available,...

Gamma Fan #2

5:1 ratio, will try same design with 1.5:1 next. Didn't get much better rpm between 20:1 and 5:1 with similar design.

What variables affect rpm the most? Thinking my vertical displacer might be too heavy.

Re: First Sterling Finally Running

With the twenty to one ratio, the motor will run on a lower temperature. I stick mine on the electric stove evert now and then while I cook my lunch, or put the LTD motor on top of the pot of vegetables while they cook. Ian S C Starting to design #3. Want to try vertical again with a 5:1 ratio to g...

Re: First Sterling Finally Running

On the top motor you might be able to put a fan driven by the engine to blow across the power cylinder, it doesn't take much air movement to move quite a bit of heat. You might be able to fit a pulley beside the flywheel. That is the main draw back with that design of motor, no plain shaft sticking...

Re: First Sterling Finally Running

Runs good with propane torch. Any tips on running with less heat? Or how to get it to run longer without over heating? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171008/781d195996f476f52fae6c778416841d.jpg Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk Number 2 running, Vertical Fan, 400RPM https://youtu.be/FVZuJwh_...

Re: First Sterling Finally Running

That's excellent speed, just needs a bit of engineering to redesign the hot end. If you haven't broken something, you are not really trying hard enough, the hot end probably needs to be brazed into the flange, what is the hot cap made of? Ian S C Hot cap is mild steel tube turned down to make it th...

Re: First Sterling Finally Running

Did some tweaking and reached 6500 rpm. Until the hot cap blew off. Was held in with high temp lock tight but I was using propane torch. Guessing it got to hot.Image
