Dave All good advice bluechip, thanks. the more I think about it the electrical side is the most vulnerable and so having a huge alternator is a bad idea. much better to have muttiple smaller units t...

dam, that's a good idea. I did not think of that. good tip.

Re: Choosing a DC Motor Question

Hi Wellington The charging voltage is temperature dependent.......... Dave Thanks for the tips bluechip. Ive seen a few projects on youtube of stirlings made from junk charging 12v car batteries like approtechie channel. I notice they have outputs around the 10w mark. How long does it take to charg...

Re: Choosing a DC Motor Question

I have seen this style of alternator used to good effect on a few Stirling engines. The lynxsteam guy has some videos on sizing and building the alternator. This is also a popular topic among the wind turbine builders on fieldlines.com Yep, Ive seen the lynx steam channel and his monotube boiler an...

Choosing a DC Motor Question

After much research I'm just getting started building my first stirling engine and have come full circle only to realise that building one from junk is the most sensible way to go. I want to charge 12v batteries. How do I select the correct sized and rated dc motor to charge a 12v gel battery? do I ...

Re: Comparing heat input for LTD Stirlings vs solar steam

Here is some more data for comparison. First, my hat is off to anyone who.............. you make some very good points. I agree with you that solar steam is very impracticle on a large scale not to mention the additional danger of boilers. Solar thermal is very simplistic and low tech reliable and ...

Re: Are LTD Stirlings Suitable for power generation?

If a person has ready access to very inexpensive, burnable fuel then steam or a high temperature Stirling engine makes sense. If the goal is to derive the energy from solar, the LTD Stirling has some virtue in that solar water heating is about 5 times more efficient than photovoltaics and about one...

Re: Are LTD Stirlings Suitable for power generation?

For power generation a small high temperature engine directly heated by the sun, charging a battery bank would probably be cheaper than the large LTD motor. For a reliable power supply it could be complimented by a wind turbine. Ian S C but whats the motivation of building such a large machine? is ...

Re: Are LTD Stirlings Suitable for power generation?

You could feed it with solar heated water below boiling temperature, picture 400 feet of black, 4" pipe in a warm, sunny location. It is an intriguing project. Hot water can be stored and the machine can run 24 / 7 but it is a project for the truly dedicated. ok, so we've established that hund...

Re: Designing for Torque

You can have high torque, and low revs, or high revs and low torque, the power out put will be the same for a motor of the same capacity. The things that will give more power(that's what you are looking for) is more heat in, and more heat out, better cooling system. Ian S C So how would you go abou...

Re: Designing for Torque

Ian has hit the nail on the head. Gear reduction ! The Stirling cycle alternates pressure and vacuum in more or less equal measures. It is not ideal for building big torque. I would add that pressurization and larger size also adds torque. In theory, adding cylinders adds torque but that does not a...

Thanks Ian. Can you think of any other factors that will give higher torque?
