I really like your engine. The brass work is nice. It looks much more refined than my pop-can approach.

Re: Possible LTD From Found Tube
Floral foam, such as Oasis, does not melt when it gets hot. It becomes combustible at around 650 degrees F.
Silicone foam is another good choice when you need tolerance for high temperatures.

Re: Possible LTD From Found Tube
I just discovered a similar tube. The packaging containers from bulk CDs and DVDs has a similar plastic tube. It has a much thinner wall, but would work well for the sidewall of an LTD engine.

Re: Possible LTD From Found Tube
"Low Temperature Differential" means, among other things, low power. You can't get out any more power than you put in. The best example of a generator I have seen on a LTD motor was able to make a low voltage LED flash. If that is enough power to charge your phone, then the answer is yes. ...

Re: Quick and Easy Stirling Engine
I have written up the plans for the Quick and Easy Stirling Engine and made them available in printed form. This is a fun little project that can go together in less than 3 hours. This is a great project for the classroom as well as for people looking for an easy entry into pop can engines. The plan...

Are you building the pre-machined kit, or the one that requires you to make all the parts?

Re: Possible LTD From Found Tube
That is a great find for LTD applications! The displacer does not need to be very tall, since LTD engines of this type already have the hot side and cold side isolated from each other. Many of my LTD designs use 1/4" poster board, and they work very well. The trick with the LTD design is to do ...

Quick and Easy Stirling Engine
I recently built and tested a new can engine design. I was asked to design a can engine that can be built with simple tools in about 3 hours or less. This is what I came up with. I am in the process of writing up the instructions to go with it. Here is a link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/wat...

This would not be a Stirling. It is more closely related to a steam turbine.

Re: Non-cylindrical hot air chamber?
The length of the displacer is influenced by many other factors in the design. I high temp engine needs a long displacer because of the distance the air (or other gas) must travel to reach the other end of the engine. A low temperature differential engine can have a very short displacer, as you see ...

Grizzly Stirling Engine Kit
I just finished my first machined Stirling engine. I built the horizontal engine kit from Grizzly.com. It still needs a little work, but I am pleased with it so far. The kit presented some challenges, but as you can see the end result is pretty good. Here is a video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A...
