Re: Oddball theoretical question - ammonia absorption

One contributor to Model Engineer mag had a problem, his gas container was freezing up, and the cooling water was too hot, so he put thegas cylinder in the water container, and the motor took off. Ian S C

Re: planning fro large solar gamma stirling engine

Jims right about the phasing of the cylinders, as it is it would run in the fashon of a single cylinder motor. I would then start by turning the motor over, crank at he bottom, displacers at the top, then you need a very large reflector, because if you want power out, you need lots of heat in, you w...

Re: V-twin compressor pump...

vile fly, I don't think you have too much to worry about with dead space. I have an artical in Model Engineering (1977) by W.D.Urwick on Stirling Engines, he did some experiments, and ended up with 6ft of rubber hose conecting the power cylinder to the displacer, with very little change in performan...

Re: Is my epoxy piston good enough?

With the second hand bushes you'll proberbly have to bore them to true the bore, if they were OK they would'nt be chucked out. If you can get them its a good cheap sourse of materials. Another good cylinder is the cylinder inside an old shock absorber, the rod down the middle, and the outer case are...

Re: Is my epoxy piston good enough?

Its round 'cos thats the way its made, its generally made to a higher standard than copper. Also it is much better as a cylinder as it has much less friction, and as its harder it wears better. Bronze would be even better, you can get that in the form of bearing bushes either new or, as I do old wor...

Re: V-twin compressor pump...

The flared tubes gets around the usual brazing, I hope it will be a possitive seal under heat. I can imagine stainless tubes TIG welded to a stainless head. Some of the more sophistecated motors have had the tubes brazed in by a vacuum system, using a high temperature alloy. If your system works, it...

Re: Solar LTD Displacer

Hi Jordan, I imagine its the KS 90 vertion , I think if you just scale it up all over would be OK. You should keep the clearance top and bottom and at the side of the displacer as near as possible to the original motor. Ian S C

Re: Alpha type engine Idea/need input

Hi Mark, I have my doubts about that idea of an engine, but I suppose the way to prove it one way or another is to build one. Do it carefully, to the best it can be done, using the correct materials were possible, and then if its going to go, its got the best chance. Ian S C

Aviator168, if you want round, find some brass tube, copper tube is made for water pipe mainly, and water does'nt worry what shape the pipe is. ian S C

Re: Free Piston Stirling Engine

I have a free piston motor with a linear alternator. My first attempt was a coaxial design but I had problems controlling thr stroke of he displacer, and it knocked thwe end out of the hot end, my second go was one with parallel cylinders, and that was a bit easier to control. The alternator consist...

Re: Is this a Sterling Engine?

Sawwas, I don't think so, looks similar to some small petrol/ kerosene, 2 stroke motors, a Friend has a collection of them, next time I see him I'll try and check it out. Some of them did'nt need a reverse gear, you just stopped the motor, and started it in the opposite direction. Ian S C

Re: Design/Build One HP Alpha Stirling Engine

One gas thats easy to obtain these days, is Argon, the motor used it at 1100psi. The Phillips motor used oil, and was pressurised with air, they did'nt seem to have problems. The Phillips motor could be started by motoring the generator. It had a little compressor built in to maintain pressure, and ...

Re: Design/Build One HP Alpha Stirling Engine

Pressures up to 200 atmopheres, or near to 3000psi have been used with Hydrogen, and Helium. THE Phillips engines used air at up to 20 atmospheres, or 300psi, these are the pressures that us lesser mortals might aim for, the higher pressures require some serious engineering, this is where the real p...
