See, that is why I have the plans there. I love hearing that. The little engine is a great learning device and is a great prep for a "more challenging" model.

Have fun!

Re: walking beam engine does not run

These engines are very fussy about friction. That is, all the joints and moving part have to be "loose", very loose. If the parts fit too tight, it will not work. This is the reason most of the engines don't work right off. Make it loose (but not sloppy). The power piston and piston cylind...

Re: walking beam engine does not run

lasanderson,

I sent you an email.

I will post a sheet here on how to trouble shoot the engine when I get home. It is probably a timing issue.

Hello Canuck,

Sure looks like a design that has been done before. Check out this website and see what you think.

On a tin can engine........a thin piece of metal does not "displace" a lot of air. The job of the displacer is not that of a piston like in an engine, but to displace air from one side to the other. It needs volume to do that. Maybe I should think about changing the name of the "displ...

Hi Charlie, Stefan is right about trying to keep the displacer vertical. The Horizontal tin can engine is border line a failure. I have done everything I could to just keep it running. Even at that I can't keep it going longer than a minute and a half. Trying to get it to do "work" is not ...

Re: Tin Can Engine

Hi Devin, #1 does the hole in the piston cylinder into the dispacer cylinder have to be small like that to keep pressure or could the entire 1" be cut out as long as there is no leaks to improve efficientcy? I found if it is too small it will give you problems. You will loose power. A little la...

OK I'l give it a try! LOL It is possible to use a Stirling engine to run a go Kart. They use a Stirling engine to run a submarine in Sweeden? http://www.kockums.se/Submarines/aipstirling.html The problems are, It won't be cheap. Trottling it will be a problem Getting it small enough will be a proble...

Excellent engine. The Lamina is my next engine to make. I have three different plans for it right now. I like the way you secure the test tube to the engine. That is a great idea! Nice mounting of parts also! Very nice! There apears to be 2 or 3 different versions on your links. Same engine differen...

I would still disagree with the piston being part of the momentum of the flywheel or part of the flywheel. Maybe I’m wrong here but  when the piston get to the most outward position something has to stop it in it’s track and get it to go the other way. That takes energy to do that. That...

I disagree with your findings about alum and your idea about polyacetal. I also happen to know he is building a walking beam engine. The best piston material is graphite. Harder to get. Hard to machine in a garage without a lathe. Very light weight. Self oiling. Very minimal expansion . Will ...
