Re: Is it possible to change the fluid of a stirling engine?
A Stirling Engine was featured in "Model Engineer" magazine a number of years ago, that had an electric element wound around the hot cap, it used low voltage, I can't remember the Watts, not too much, probably less than 100W. Ian S C I remember reading paper on Stirling engines and the st...

Re: Is it possible to change the fluid of a stirling engine?
I've needed to make yet ANOTHER change so in essence, all i want to do is to pressurize a Stirling engine could I do this by putting a Stirling engine into a container that can withstand pressure and then heating that container to raise pressure? i would put both the heating source and the cooling ...

Re: Is it possible to change the fluid of a stirling engine?
Thanks for the response, but i'll have to completely change my experiment to test what i want to test for, i'd have to change one property of gas without changing another the property i'm testing for is molar specific heat capacity in this aspect, helium is actually VERY slightly better than hydrog...

Re: DIY Oil Drum Stirling Engine (a newbi question!)
Heh, i've lived off grid for 13 years, and I've pondered this subject a bunch. When you think of an unpressurized engine you are lucky to get a watt per cc. There is an old thread here about using a drum. I thought about an old 100 lb propane bottle as a displacer cylinder. Trouble is heat creep. Go...

Welcome. Great work!
What are you using for con rods?
Can you get some close-up photos?

Re: large lamina flow build
derwood, Well done. Before anything else I'd shoot for an engine that will run until the heat source is removed. If ya gotta build a cooling system for it oh well. The idea, for me, is to build an engine that will work every time for a long time. My Coleman lantern globe gamma engine will run all da...

vamoose,
in the German version are those bellows not the bladders for truck air ride suspensions, or something similar?

Re: Composite Material Regenerator
The magnetron would only have to fire for a few degrees of the dwell time while the displacer "hot" end is near BDC. So that 1K wouldn't have to be constant.
Yes, I think some serious shielding would be needed, maybe encasing the entire engine.

Re: Composite Material Regenerator
What if you could increase or decrease the working gas flow through the displacer / regenerator at will ? Not only control its flow but also where that flow takes place in the regenerator. What Iam thinking of is sieve plates that progressively line up. Stepped magnets, on the outside would pull th...

Re: Flywheel Design
fullofhotair, short stroke, high revs, lower torque, long stroke, lower revs, higher torque, you pays yer money, and yer takes yer choice, the power total should in theory be the same. Ian S C I agree with the output power being the same. Here's the thing, for me, that I think about a lot. With hig...

Re: Those Crazy Russians!!
I remember talking about a rotary Stirling here a few months back. I still think a common/shared hot end would work great. I sure don't have the machining ability to even begin to make this work, but maybe a crude 4 cylinder isn't out of the question. "Borrowing" the crank ideas from old p...

Re: My Next Stirling Model
Quite a good type of cooling tower can be made of two sizes of cans, the small dia can,cut the top and bottom out to make a tube, in the large can cut a hole in the bottom to fit the small can, and solder it in. You may cut a disc with a hole to fit the top. Solder in tubes top and bottom for the w...

Re: power for using an alternator for battery charging?
theropod2, Is this what you would use with a small(12 in. stator), three phase axil flux alternator? No. I'd make the stator match the expected voltage of the load (battery) plus a little for rectifier losses in a axial flux alternator, say 15 volts DC for a 12V system. I'd use the little pulse cha...
