Re: power for using an alternator for battery charging?
voltage_pulse.jpg Here is the schematic I referenced earlier. It's a really simple build, and the 2 555 timers could be replaced with a single 556 or even one 555, but the single timer won't allow a variable pulse width. With the two timers the first timer sets the delay between pulses and the seco...

Re: power for using an alternator for battery charging?
theropod2, Arent LEDs more efficient? Iam trying to get as much light as possible. A little circuitry and super cap are ok. You have probably seen the U-tube videos where they use an earth battery=1volt to light up a string of LEDs. They use a joule thief and capacitor. Can I use the axil alternato...

Re: power for using an alternator for battery charging?
This would only be for lighting. So you want to use an axial flux alternator. The little bit of reading I have done recommends using a 3 phase alternator and a3 phase rectifier? It said for low rpms so 350 to 500 rpm is ok? To get the most light ,would I use LED or fluorescenct? Dc or AC? Anything ...

Re: power for using an alternator for battery charging?
You are more likely to have a low voltage, and low current, low voltage can be boosted, but that drops the current by the same proportion, you can still charge batteries, just takes longer. For your alternator, ceramic magnets are possibly better, rare earth magnets will cause cogging, loading the ...

Re: power for using an alternator for battery charging?
Ron T, you will need about 18 Volts at about 10 Watts for a 12 Volt battery, my larger motors produce about 2.5 to 3 Watts, and quite good for charging nicads, and smaller accumulators. To get a suitable sized motor you might just have to build, or have built, a suitable sized motor. Your first pro...

Re: Crank Mechanism For A Solar Powered Beta Stirling Engine
Isn't the rating of most adult bicycles far greater than 50 watts? Why not consider bike bearings/races and hubs/axles. They're already made. The offsets for the throw(s) could be made to "pinch" the main crank and slide away from, to towards, center and change the stroke length accordingl...

Re: Philips MP1002CA Stirling Engine
OMG!! You lucky person! Don't do much of anything to the engine until you have a service manual in hand. Seriously. The tolerances on this jewel might be very tight... There are folks around that know this treasure inside and out. If it doesn't even run it is a find to dance about. I dream of findin...

Re: Geometry of pancake medium temperature stirling
Don't have a clue, staska, how to help you, but this sounds like a very interesting project. I want to also build a 200 watt range engine, but I am thinking of a big, slow, simple gamma. I have a forest full of trash wood and debris I can use as heat input, so that part isn't an issue. Building a 6&...

Re: Water Cooling Designs
Hawke, Thanks for the photo. Good stuff. A suggestion? Make an extension for your heat stack and make the outlet slightly smaller than your current opening. Make a sort of very shallow funnel. As the hot exhaust rises it will lose some of that heat and contract a little. A slight length/height exten...

Re: Crank Mechanism For A Solar Powered Beta Stirling Engine
Hi! I'm making a 50W Solar Powered Beta Stirling Engine, that will operate on a hot end temperature of 250 degree Centigrade. Can anyone please help me in designing the crank mechanism & connecting rods for the engine to transfer my power? (I will be using an alternator to generate electrical p...

Oh a vent tube was added to the heat chamber which does in fact make a noticeable increase in rpm's.

Re: Fire chamber vent tubes
Ahh, ok. Ive just used tea lamps so far really. The higher flame alcohol or propane would need the draft. Thx If the engine has a hot "box" end the vent opening can be a little lower so the most intensely heated air stays in the upper part of the heat chamber/fire box. With this redirecti...

Re: varible phasing
Maybe mount the power piston con rod to the end of a stepper motor also attached to the main crank. Moved by onboard batteries and controller advanced or retarded by the degrees of the stepper operation. Maybe a bluetooth connection. The stepper would have to have a higher holding torque than the en...

Excellent work!
My ONLY beef is with the image sizes. All of us don't have screaming fast broadband.
Can you provide us some detail on the glass parts? I am very much interested in the use of glass in Stirling engines.

Re: Linear alternator discussion
Hi there, I can confirm the engine shown in the picture is used by Viessmann inside a Mchp boiler, this is one of our customers and just one of the applications. The engine is a 1kW electrical output engine with linear alternator, its made by Microgen Engine Corporation ltd; I am the group technolo...
