water jacket for hot end

Hello Has anyone any advice to offer regarding the idea of putting a water jacket around a stirlings hot end to heat the hot end with heated water?. Ive seen stirlings running in cups of warm water before and am curious to know how performance will compare to heating the hot end directly with a meth...

will it still work almost as good if the 304 stainless tube is 1 or 2mm thick?

Re: Stirling engines with an internal spring question

Important, if you use magnets, either for a spring, or a linear alternator, or both as I have, the surrounding structure of the motor must be non magnetic. Looks like you are a seasoned veteran stirling engine builder. I'll remember the non magnetic tip. Thanks. I'm ready to start building now. wil...

Re: Stirling engines with an internal spring question

Instead of steel springs for the free piston motor I use two magnets with the like poles facing each other(so they repel). Ian S C hmmm, never realised you can use magnets in a free piston motor. That would be a lot simpler than finding springs with apropriate springyness. I guess the magnets would...

How do mild steel and stainless compare in performance? what are your experiences with the two? Also how does thick and thin effect performance?

Thanks Ian. Your always very helpful. Takes a bit of time to get all the innards out i guess. Any idea if the casings are regular mild steel or some other special alloy?

Re: Silver soldering stainless steel hot end

Wellington, in my opinion it should. I also assume that you intend a silver brazing wire like Harris Safety Silv 45 or something similar. In operation, you should not allow the engine to stall indefinitely under high heat. have you ever known a stirling engine to explode? Thinking about it i guess ...

Oh yes. batteries. I tried emptying one the other day but had little success as the icky chemicals were stuck hard to the casing. Any idea how to empty a battery easily cleanly and safely?

Silver soldering stainless steel hot end

It would seem it is impossible to buy stainless steel tubing in uk that has one end of the tube sealed or seamless to save money on buying expensive glass syringes. Im considering silver soldering plate stainless steel onto the end of some stainless tube. Does anyone know if the join will hold up un...

Re: Stirling engines with an internal spring question

Wellington, the Ringbom motor is what you are thinking of..... Hello again Ian, I think i want to do something even simpler than a ringbom engine to begin with. The thermo accoustic looks a simple engine. I think i will make the hot end from stainless steel and brass for the push rod. Do you think ...
