Re: My stirling engine , now it runs on alcohol stoves ! Special thanks Lan SC !,

You can also use high temperature head gasket material. Cut a few gaskets to make for the same thickness. I have used this idea a few times to try and prevent heat going to the cooling area.

Re: Got a used larger hobby engine, start up prep?

Nice engine - Personally I like to use methylated spirits as the burner, especially for small engines, however, yours appears to require a gas one to heat the end. As for the piston, graphite works real well or a very light oil if the metals are not alloy.

Re: Stirling Engines are difficult to analyse

Talking of dead space guys - I do not seem to loose any power from engines using a air operated water pump, that is, using the expansion and contraction of the air within the displacer cylinder. Wouldn't this be dead space even if I have allowed a little extra length for the displacer.

Re: Sterling Diaphragm Engine

Yep! you were right Ian. The slower the better, I have now set my lathe to 150rpm and it works a wonder on the parting off of the alloy and especially brass. I also listened to Thanh as you may have noticed from his pics that the angle of attack was a lot more acute to what I was using. It also made...

Re: hot Air Beam Engine with cooling and generator

Thanks Ian - I will eventually go back with the stainless wool as it seems to hold better. Steel wool is too fine and breaks up easily, even when I have tried A heavier grade, What I can tell you that in small models as I am building, that a regenerator makes a big difference (using wool that is). I...

Re: hot Air Beam Engine with cooling and generator

Thanks Aviator - Another problem come up after running this engine for a couple of hours. The displacer started to full apart (made of steel wool) and jammed the intake to the piston. I think Ian told me this could happen using steel wool. Anyway, I made a stainless one (0.3mm wall thickness) that g...

Re: hot Air Beam Engine with cooling and generator

Love the paint work Thanh - The model looks absolutely stunning. Hi Aviator - Re the temperature of the sterling engine. The earlier model I made with a fan attached (diaphragm type) used a radiator. First off, the heat source was a small pressurized all fuel type vaporizing burner that was adapted ...

Re: hot Air Beam Engine with cooling and generator

This could be a good idea Thanh - Instead of using a forced fan feed for radiator I could just go and buy one of these for $40.00 landed at your door. I reckon the air would flow through and cool the water easy enough if the radiator is placed horizontal - It would fit under my stand at least :laugh...

Hi Ian - It looks as if this can be controlled by the valve for best performance.

Re: hot Air Beam Engine with cooling and generator

Hi Thanh - Trick little system of using a rubber diaphragm that is driven by the expanding and contraction of air within the displacer chamber. The first lot of photos show you the layout of the diaphragm. This is 25mm in diameter and works very well. Normally I would place the pump elsewhere but th...

Re: hot Air Beam Engine with cooling and generator

Well! nearly at the finish line now. The engine is now complete and working - Have added the lights with a small 3 phase alternator and as yet to make the radiator and/or cooling tower. To my surprise, this engine has quite a lot of power and I had to use a small flame from a spirit burner to slow i...

Re: Snifting valve

Well! That is good news. Now that would work as all the air by then has done its job and the displacer will be then falling which would cause a small amount of air into the engine. Worth a try - Thanks Aviator. Trevor

I reckon you might be right there Tibsim! I have nearly finished the other engine now complete with generator. Little flame with lots of power - see my thread. Trev - and thanks for your help
