Re: Kouhoupt Horizontal Stirling Engine

"You may notice the much larger Stirling engine in the background. I plan to show that engine in a future post."

a video link of your big engine running with watt output if it has a generator would be good.

Re: Kouhoupt Horizontal Stirling Engine

Very Nice. How long did it take you to build it?

Re: My First Walking Beam Stirling engine build with pictures

Looks good. One easy and cheap way to cast small parts is to use the delft clay casting system:

Re: Flame temperature

Knowing which part of a flame is hottest and placing your object to be heated in that zone is very important for efficient heat transfer. Many people wrongly assume the center of a flame is hottest when in fact the hottest part is just above the pointed cone tip. Has anyone ever tried diesel as a fu...

Flywheel - Cast Iron or Carbon Fibre

Three questions you will probably want to add to the top ten most stupid questions of all time hall of shame list but here gos anyway: My goal is to produce power and so I will be attaching magnets to a flywheel next to a stator with wire coils imbedded in glass fibre. 1) Do I go for a heavy cast ir...

Re: Designing for maximum watt output

Thanks Ian. And what MacGuiver solutions do you know for pressurising a stirling engine with air? Is there a simple way using a bycicle pump or something?

Re: Are LTD Stirlings Suitable for power generation?

thanks for the example Alfista. So If I follow you correctly: 1 horsepower = 745 watts divided by three = aprox 248 net watts output per hr for a machine 60 inches in diameter with an MEP (mean effective pressure) of 3 psi (pounds per square inch) @ 90 rpm (revolutions per minute). 248Watts x 24hrs ...

Re: Home Built Stirling for Remote Power Generation

Hello Tom. I too have been bitten by the stirling engine bug and am looking for a 12v battery charging solution. take a look at solar evacuated heat pipes as a solar input device. Some people are experimenting with a high surface area graphine heat transfer fluid on youtube.

Are LTD Stirlings Suitable for power generation?

I've noticed a few large LTD projects one of which claims to have a 300W output (but whats the input?). Would i be right in saying that the whole point of a large LTD stirling design is that it requires only a very low level of heat to generate power with the downside being that it is as big as a ta...

Re: Members Top Picks

The whispergen seems to be a top of the range machine similer to the stirlings NASA are experimenting with. Its a shame the company decided to take their basic engine and turn it into something similer to the complex combi boilers with lots of bells and whistles. Would have been a great product had ...

Re: Designing for maximum watt output

That's a real MacGyver masterpiece. I only wish I found stirling engines sooner in life. I remember dismissing stirlings years ago due to low torque but it would seem they can meat your needs if you can learn to be frugal with watts. I am researching how to build a 12v inverted stirling genset from ...

Re: Stirling Engines from Quality Junk

what would you say is the maximum temperature and rpm a stirling can run at without the engineering getting too complex Ian? My idea was to make a vacuum solar heat pipe attached to a stirling and put some high surface area heat transfer fluid made from graphene particles in it (see youtube Robert M...

Re: Members Top Picks

Yep, that's a cool project. I had the same idea only smaller. unusual choice of location for output heat. I'm guessing he put it there because the main riser tube inside the rocket stove was just too hot for a sterling engine especially a beast that size.

Stirling Engines from Quality Junk

Hello All. Ive been looking into building stirling engines from junk. There are plenty of examples on the internet of how to build stirling engines from junk already and I imagine many undertaking such a project will quickly become curious like me on how they can improve apon their first engine. I w...
