Re: Design and Manufacture of Beta Stirling

I agree, but what are the ? 4 black rings around the middle of the top half of the displacer cylinders? These commercially produced motors seem to be more ornamental than productive power producing machines. For cooling, some aluminium bar bored through for a light fit over the displacer cylinders, ...

Re: Beta engine measurements

Jonathan, your power piston is going to be 18 mm in diameter, if for example you made the power stroke10 mm, then the displacer would have a stroke of 15 mm, just make the displacer stroke 1.5 x the power stroke. You either need two cranks at 90* on the crankshaft, or it can be done with a single cr...

Re: Sterling Engine not running

Have you tried running your motor with the power piston, and it's cylinder wiped clean of all oil?

Re: Sterling Engine not running

I think it's complaining about being locked in a cage, go on it's not a Lion. Seriously though I think you might need to take out the power piston and clean the oil off of it, and wipe out the inside of the cylinder. Did you actually find where the unusual noise was coming from, was it the bearings,...

Re: Problem Rider Ericsson model

I would have thought that the valve opened when the internal pressure dropped below the atmospheric air pressure, I could be wrong, but I'm just going by a friend's vintage Heinreci motor. You can seethe snifter valve on the left , just above the fire box, a small brass fitting below the water pipe....

Re: Need advice buying my first sterling engine

Generally I would say that a Stirling Engine power grid is a different technology to a diesel based one, With a diesel power unit you start up and use the power as required, then shut down. With a Stirling based power supply, you would run it full time and charge a battery bank, this bank can be rec...

Re: Need advice buying my first sterling engine

A 30hp STIRLING ENGINE is going to be quite a large machine, the well known Philips gen set produces about 200 Watts, it's around the size of a 1 to 2 KW IC gen sets, Co generation systems like the Whisper Gen produce about 1 KW of electricity, and 5 KW of heat to be used for central heating or dome...

Did any of the forum members attend the conference, if so perhaps a few words, maybe just what you got in the goodies bag!

Re: Design and Manufacture of Beta Stirling

The cooling system on a Stirling Engine is possibly more important than the heating, that's why most of my motors are water cooled, even one of my small ones has water in a hopper. That motor has a power piston of 5/8" diameter and a stroke of 1/2". the displacer is 5/8" bore by 3/4&q...

Re: Problem Rider Ericsson model

The breather valve/snifter valve as far as I know is there to bring the pressure back to atmospheric as it tends to drop a bit over time. How good is the cooling system, motors with pumps often pass the pumped water through the water jacket, and if you pump from a fairly small container, and back in...

Re: Problem Rider Ericsson model

Put the heat up, and take up the extra power with the water pump, these motors are designed to work with a load, also more interesting to any onlookers. I have one BETA motor with a pump, it draws the water from a container on the floor, about 3ft, it passes through the water jacket on the motor, th...

Re: Problem Rider Ericsson model

Test 070 (640x480).jpg Hi Rik, did you build the Rider motor your self, and was it a kit of castings? For a 2" motor I don't think you have a big enough flame, I think you will find it needs quite a bit bigger than a cigarette lighter. My motor of similar size uses the burner from a camp stove...

Re: Alpha vs Beta

No the ALPHA motor is a different motor, the hot and cold cylinders both generate power, where as the other Stirling type motors have the one power cylinder, and use some of that power to drive the displacer. My second build is based on Dyna, a BETA motor designed by James G. Rizzo, it has a bore of...

Re: Alpha vs Beta

I can assure you that an ALPHA motor has a higher power to weight over either a BETA, or GAMMA motor. The swept volume of the cylinders of an ALPHA is equal, ie 1:1, I'v only built one unpressurised Ross Yoke ALPHA motor, 35 mm bore x 22 mm stroke, about 5 Watt at the crankshaft. Ian S C DSC01351.JPG
