Re: Modern take on old alpha Rider

I'm also a bit sceptical about the 100-150watts, your figure's a bit nearer, Andy's 35cc Ross Yoke engine, according to the artical in Model Engineering mag back in 1981 had a maximum power of44.1 watts at 2750 rpm., and a free speed of over 4000 rpm. The method of forming stainless sounds interesti...

Re: Stirling engine on a bicycle.

St Catherine, sorry can't give you a photo, I'v got the book. I'v built a Ross Yoke engine with 35mm bores, and 20mm strokes, unpressurised, and not run in it will produce about 5 watts, I want to build one with 50mm + bores, and 30mm stroke, this should give quite a bit of power. Don't just look in...

Re: Modern take on old alpha Rider

onecycleDan 1990, welcome aboard, sounds interesting. I would suggest that you make one crank adjustable (you may end up with 2 crankshafts, one trial, and the pemanant one). Set up initially at 90 deg, and mark the crank. Test the motor for torque and revs., to find the power out put, watts=RPM X t...

Re: Where can I get 1hp to 2hp stirling engine?

The whisper Gen is being built in Spain, and installed in UK, by fitters trained by a team from New Zealand. Before the training course was set up, the local(UK) fitters were having problems. Don't know about the rest of Europe, I think they where looking at Germany. The contract was about $NZ 300 m...

Re: V-twin compressor pump...

For displacers and hot caps, I use thin walled stainless tube with an end TIG welded in, thickness around .007", I use a little thicker for displacer cylinders, I'v got a tame TIGger, who has a sheet metal shop near by, he does'nt really like the very thin stuff. Ian S C

Re: Where can I get 1hp to 2hp stirling engine?

Vile fly, you can buy the whisper Gen, as they make them for boats/ yatchs etc., as well as the ones for domestic use in Europe, but they are a bit expensive, I think its getting up to $NZ20,000. but they say that with sale of power back to the main supplier its possible to pay off the price in abou...

Re: V-twin compressor pump...

As pistons go, a well fitting cast iron piston can be made very light, it does'nt have the stresses of an IC engine, or a compressor, and a number of shallow grooves on the skirt form a labyrinth seal. The bores can be lapped, using a cylindrical lap made of wood, do this then make the pistons to fi...

Re: Stirling University Project - Phase angle question

I did have it explained, but it got wiped out in a bit of chaos that occured a wee while ago. Generally 90deg is the phase angle between the displacer and the power piston. The motor can be tuned by altering the angle. First get the motor going at its best at 90 deg., mark the shaft and crank, adjus...

Re: Where can I get 1hp to 2hp stirling engine?

Jims right, New Zealand's not 3rd world, Christchurch, and Canterbury University are considered to be a world center for hot air developement, it forms a major part of the School of Engineering, and is the home of Whisper Tech, and the Whisper Gen power unit, I'm not involved with Whisper Tech, but ...

Re: Newbie builds a "Beamer"

Hi Bob, welcome, I,v built a few(14) motors, your thoughts on running the motor over for an hour or so with an electric motor is the right way to go, and a number of the published builders have this as the last stage of building a motor. After that as you run the motor it improves with age, and if y...

Re: V-twin compressor pump...

vile fly, hi, sounds interesting, a bit worried about using piston rings, have you weakened them a bit, you only need the lightest pressure on the cylinder, maybe make rings out of teflon.

Re: Where can I get 1hp to 2hp stirling engine?

The rice powered, 5hp motor is ok, and could be scaled down to give 1hp-2hp size, which in its self, compared to the vintage motors is quite large in power output, but not much use to thaipokey, who wants an already designed and built motor. Building your own is about the only way to go. Ian S C
