Re: Alpha type engine Idea/need input

If you will read the quote you posted you will see that I said pressure was not moved but that air was. the air is moved from on side to the other (hot side to cold side). This happens because the displacer piston occupies space and the air has to move (air is displaced) to the other side. When the...

Re: Alpha type engine Idea/need input

Pressure change does not occur at the power piston in a gamma configuration. The power piston reacts to the change in pressure inside the whole closed sytem. . Are you sure there is no difference in pressure from hot to cold sides? A pressure change does happen in the sealed air sytem in Stirling a...

Re: Alpha type engine Idea/need input

In this engine, instead of a single cylinder with a hot and cold end, allowing heat to be conducted between the two, derwood is proposing a hot cylinder and cold cylinder similar to an alpha engine. However, rather than have the pistons at 90 degrees phase, he proposes having them in anti-phase so ...

Re: Alpha type engine Idea/need input

You are at the right place, the internet, to discover the Stirlings secrets. Sometimes buying a kit or ready to run model Stirling (Ebay) can give you a greater insite with hands on study on why and how they run. Continue to read back pages in this forum for the agreements and arguments on Stirling ...

Re: Alpha type engine Idea/need input

I can think of Alphas with parralel cylinders but not 180 deg. inline cylinders. Lets get our terms correct here. Compression cyl. do not exist in Stirling. You have the hot cyl with displacer piston and cold cylinder with power piston ( Gamma). Two power cylinders. (Alpha). A common cylinder with b...

Re: Alpha type engine Idea/need input

......There are no displacement cylinders in Alpha. This model idea, hot cyl pistons and displacement pistons. Heat sink to pushrod. Sealing rings for the hot piston....farthest away from the heat source. Draw up some diagrams to post for a better idea of your concept for critique. You need to study...

Re: Design on Experiment LTD Stirling

You can modify and observe the changes. The most "bang for your buck" would be an engine built to plan that runs. You can experiment with the basic construction plans in your choice of materials used, their sizes and weights, sealants and bearings, lubricants and heat input distribution an...

Re: Power piston sealing

Graphite is the material of choice for pistons in modeling Stirling. Not so much a question of design but of proper material use here. Unknown what size your cylinder is going to be. A glass, copper or steel cylinder with aluminum, Nylon or brass piston can work but may require a lubricant which cau...

Re: Troubleshooting my V8 stirling

hmmm, looks like its only gonna be an awesome paperweight then, rather than an awesome stirling! The ally is only good for 600deg then it melts, anywhere close to that and I would be worried about leaving the torch flame on too long and melting little bits. And no to bearings, the crank is machined...

Re: Troubleshooting my V8 stirling

......Ian is so right here. You will have to rework one cyl. head for heat caps. Lay aside the regenerator material for now and experiment with it after you have a running engine. Your crank and rod bearings have to be ball bearings with no or steel shielding. Minimum piston crowns, just enough to s...

Re: Newbie on Stirling Engines [Need HELP plz...]

Sounds like somebody needs to study up on how these engines work. The heated air in this sealed cyl. with its built up pressure is what provides power to push the power piston out its cyl. If you don't get any pressure in the displacer cyl its not going to run. .........not really, not a good expla...

Re: Choice of analysis type

...........I see many here on the forum spending way too much time in the analysis of model Stirling. They are book smart but when it comes down to the nuts and bolts of building a running engine they are stuck in the mud and just don't separate the praticality of constuction with the science of why...
