Re: Lets beat up Carnot

"1 Joule is 1 Newton of force used to move an object 1 meter of distance. AKA: Energy."

This statement is incorrect.

Re: Ringbom-Rice conversion?

So how would this work? In the video squeezing the bottle causes the cloud to disappear (evaporation). Releasing the bottle, low pressure/expansion causes the cloud to form (condensation). It doesn't take much of a pressure differential to make this happen, just a squeeze. But this is also not a ful...

Re: Ringbom-Rice conversion?

The idea basically is that the pressure differential between the compression and expansion strokes, instead of inducing a displacer to move to increase the temperature and expand the working fluid, the pressure changes induce condensation and evaporation. Similar to the "cloud in a bottle"...

Re: Accordion style heat input plates

Amazing video!

I never would have imagined such rigid materials, when spiral cut, could become so flexible. That certainly expands the possibilities for material selection.

Ringbom-Rice conversion?

I've been working on various conversion attempts, air compressors and generators without much success so far. It seems that the greatest expansion and contraction is realized where the working fluid approaches phase change, as in the so called "rice" engine. I've wondered for years, ever s...

Re: Accordion style heat input plates

Well I got the high temperature Spiral displacer in the engine, all reassembled. https://youtu.be/o4_SYIfyftE?si=eiLpsJ_G61rRHwlZ I have a few preliminary observations. What I mean by "preliminary" is I don't have it exactly running yet, but I spent most of the night trying to get it worki...

Re: HELP! Alpha Stirling Engine Not Running

... the idea of directly heating and cooling alpha cylinders is a stretch, ... Is it? Admittedly, I'm not a big fan of Alpha engines generally, and don't have any hands on experience building one, but I think every illustration, animation (such as above) show heating and cooling of the cylinders. I...

Re: HELP! Alpha Stirling Engine Not Running

I hadn't noticed the copper tubing until Matt pointed it out. There have been people in here from time to time asking "why won't my engine run"? Previously I've pointed out engines made of copper likely are loosing heat/energy due to the copper parts. Copper draws/conducts heat like a spon...

Re: Model LTD max power effort

Anyway why would it ever be desirable to NOT heat ALL of the working fluid? Tom, in another thread, you recently commented that hot air engines run off pressure...and I always keep this in mind. I don't get hung up on heat except as it relates to pressure. So, in Elon buzz, pressure is 1st order an...

Re: Modified "Hot" Beta engine

Thats the idea Tom, I'm just surprised it seemed to be actually happening in a small scale engine. Of course there could be another explanation but its just one more unknown with these things. Of course the glass the inner displacer is made of could be different (lower melting point) than the outer...

...I get the idea...using a hot jab of input to increase overall pressure without heating entire gas mass,... Not sure what VincentG is up to entirely, but I don't think "without heating entire gas mass,..." is actually anybody's goal. Not mine anyway, but maybe I'm not with the program. ...

Re: HELP! Alpha Stirling Engine Not Running

Smart looking design, very cool looking. I like it a lot. Can you post an image with something for size comparison? Just a "looks about right" guess, but Maybe a 3 1/2 inch or 4 inch diameter flywheel. To big a diameter would tend to slow down the RPM. In this animation: ezgif.com-speed.gi...

Is that thermal image of the engine running, with piston installed, or just sitting on the heat, not running for 10 minutes ?

Re: Modified "Hot" Beta engine

Imagine a fire piston. If you heated up a glass fire piston from the outside with a torch, how much would that alone heat the air inside? Then compress the plunger, the heated air is going to then get very much hotter. The timing advance in a Stirling engine is such that the air inside is suddenly h...

Re: HELP! Alpha Stirling Engine Not Running

Why is your "cold side" 125°F ? Various types of Stirling engines will (sometimes) be able to run "free piston" or without a flywheel. This may not be true of Alpha type engines. I've never known any Alpha type Stirling to run without a flywheel, but I don't know if anyone ever t...
