Re: Need help with our gamma school project engine

here's something interesting. the engine runs better in a vertical position with the hot side of the displacer facing down. We are now getting it to run on a small alcohol flame. Now you have gravity working for you. The pushrod gland is no longer supporting the weight of the displacer assembly. Mo...

Re: Need help with our gamma school project engine

longboy I think you misunderstood me. I want to isolate the stainless heating tip from transferring heat to our aluminum sleeve with the cooling fins. We have some paper gasket material you can make engine gaskets with, that should help prevent heat transfer. We have some stainless in the shop so w...

Re: Need help with our gamma school project engine

If we made the hot side of the displacer sleeve out of stainless would we need to isolate the heat from traveling to the cooling fin alum side of the displacer sleeve? NO! Your cooling fins is your radiator. You want that in contact with the sleeve, not isolated from it. Lets clear up some terms he...

Re: Need help with our gamma school project engine

I'd like to see the photos. Your hot cylinder/sleeve is the wrong material. Use Pyrex or steel/ stainless steel here. With aluminum and brass you are DOA here! You want to heat up the air within....not cook the engine. The displacer clearance is fine. Give the displacer pushrod a couple drops WD40 a...

Re: A new Stirling engine concept ?

Nobody seems to understand that, FIRST, we have a Maxwell's demon! The heat pump have NO power piston ! Please, try to answer THESE questions: 1- Do you think that a Th+ (a higher temperature than the hot source) and a Tc- (a lower temperature than the cold sink) can "appear" ? (without s...

Re: A new Stirling engine concept ?

Why I would feel........"much better" when you get to the Stirling part of this heat pump Lucien01! Now about that adding a power piston to this pump for more efficiency. Write a paper about that and share it with us sometime!

Re: best combination for piston and cylinder

A graphite piston with a copper, steel, Pyrex, or brass cylinder. Tighten up your piston to cyl wall clearance and test fit. You can make the piston smaller diameter for a smooth fit but once undersize....its all over for that piston.

Re: A new Stirling engine concept ? Unlikely.

.......Lets see if I can burn you in a paragraphs or two: Reading your document about a heat pump with explainations about how air absorbs and releases heat and then convienently exposing the addition of a power cylinder will result in "a new Stirling concept" will not even get you a date ...

Re: Photo Gallery Coming Very Soon!

You are definitely in need of the machined engine class. Thats what I build. Goodluck in setting this gallery up Darryl as the occassional visitor & modelers will head straight for the photos. Also will help support the hobby and gain newbies. Youtube links in the gallery a plus too.

Longboys "WIGGERS" Stirling engine.

A vertical Stirling with twin parallel beams. The German Wiggers model engine line are custom made by order. Their "Vertical" Stirling model design was appealing to me and they retail for over $1100. This home crafted version..........much less. That appealed to me more! http://w...

Re: Regenerative displacer-copper

Another thing to consider is that there is not really a lot of difference in the conductivity of these structural metals. They look significant on paper, but the difference is not all that great. If your parts are not designed well, the motor will overheat, regardless of the materials used. Agreein...

Re: Tubing for cylinders and pistons

DOM tubing is ready to go. No boring or honing, just fit your piston. Used it for I/C models and should work as a hot tube and power cylinder in Stirling. http://www.industrialmetalsales.com/DOM ... ubing.html

Re: My alpha Stirling engine.

It's an Alpha type, with a Heylandt crown on the hot piston, looks good. I'v got to upgrade, can't see Utube with the server I'v got. From the diagram I'v got enough to build one myself. Ian S C I looked the Heylandt crown up on the web and see thats the sollution to prevent cooking the seal in the...

Re: My alpha Stirling engine.

Thanks Aviator168, Got a new perspective on these domed alpha hot pistons. Got a note from Indianola too on his engine. Check out this simular example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLDwYTGZ57I , possibly without the displacer like dome. Thanks for putting up with my banter!

Re: My alpha Stirling engine.

Thanks Chris 74. Your computor draft of your engine will help those debating weather your engine is Gamma or Alpha type. For what looks like a displacer can now be seen as being sealed at the connecting rod end to the cylinder wall and the air tube is above the sealed part of hot piston at top dead ...
