Re: My 18cc Alpha Stirling Engine

Hi Today I got the snifter Valve working. The design was changed from the O-Ring to a poppet-valve. DSC01617 (640x480).jpg The valve was working nicely. The Air could be heard, as it was taken in on the downstroke of the cold Piston. I tried then to start the engine again, but somehow it was hard to...

Re: My 18cc Alpha Stirling Engine

Hi burnit0017

The Engine is actually water cooled, but there is no water jacket on the cold cylinder. The cooler sits on top of the cold cylinder. From there it cools the air passing throug the slots machined into the top plate bewtween the two cylinders.

Re: My 18cc Alpha Stirling Engine

Hi there It's been a while. But today I was doing some tests on the Engine with the Prony Brake: (Just in case it won't embed again, here's the link too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvERRg9P2IM ) Prettymuch on the first Try the littl...

Re: My 18cc Alpha Stirling Engine

Hi, So you basically suggest something like a port on a two stroke engine? I've never thought of that. That sounds interesting. Although on a second thought, i'm not sure if this woud be a good solution. When the cold piston is at its BDC, the volume of air on top of the pistons is not at its maximu...

Re: My 18cc Alpha Stirling Engine

Hi, Yes, thats what I figured out as well. WP_000482 (640x480).jpg This is the Valve I tried. The thread on it is a M2, so it's rather small. It's buit into the block which is holding the wrist pin of the conrod in the compressiomn piston. I was thinking the solutin with the O-Ring schould be ok, bu...

Re: calculating relative dimensions

Sorry for the confusion. Your formula is correct, if you want to have it in a way that R and r correspond together like in the diagram. (although imho this does not really make sense) My formula was under the assumption, that both pistons have the same stroke. Therefore to obtain a displacer volume ...

Re: calculating relative dimensions

Hi Bill

I agree with you, that the cooling volume is pi x R x R x h which again is pi x R x R x r. But this does not equal pi x R x R X 2R!
If I take pi x R x R x r = 1.5 x (pi x r^3)
then I get

R = SQRT(1.5 x r^2)

what I think makes sense

Re: My 18cc Alpha Stirling Engine

After the first couple of testruns the engine was taken apart and given a thorough cleaning. The expansion piston showed some slight signs of rubbing and was therefore polished a little bit more. As a result there were some more rpm :big smile: max rpm.jpg Another thing that I didn't expect was, tha...

Re: Stirling engine with rhombic drive 75 ccm

Hi Ralph This must have been a Pain in the &$$, to make all the slots into stainless steel like this!! You can be proud of your achievement! Too bad, it's not performing yet as you wish. What is your intention then with the new heater head? Does it get some sort of fins on the outside as well? P...

Re: My 18cc Alpha Stirling Engine

Thank you. I don't know the power output yet. The prony brake is not yet finished, my trusty old mill broke just when I started to make parts for the brake. I don't quite understand yout question abaout the cooler? What did I do wrong with my post? I was expecting the video to embed?!?! But instead ...

My 18cc Alpha Stirling Engine

Hi In this thread i would like to show my little 18cc Alpha Engine. Alpha Cut.JPG The planning for this engine startet quite a while ago. The goal was to make a simple alpha stirling witch is able to produce some power. First i was going with an open Crank drive. Later on I decided to put a Housing ...

Re: Stirling engine with rhombic drive 75 ccm

Hello Ralph Wow, that's a really sophisticated sealing System you devised for the Shaft sealing!! I'm currently working on a little alpha Stirling, which I intend to pressurise later on too. But I don't have enough space in the engine housing, so what i want to make is some sort of a lip seal for th...

Re: Stirling engine with rhombic drive 75 ccm

Hello Ralph This is a beautiful engine you have here! And I really envy this awesome teststand, you built around it. Concerning the power output which is not up to your target yet i have a question: Does the hot cap of the engine get glowing red? And where and how exactly do you measure the hot end ...
