Re: BALLISTIC CONDUCTION, Nanostructures and Stirling Engine
Nice idea! I do vaguely recall hearing about light transmitting concrete somewhere, now that you've reminded me. Pretty cool innovation. Also maybe using Ceramic matrix composite as a piston (it can have a low friction coefficient in certain forms i think) with nanotubes at the end, could be a good ...

BALLISTIC CONDUCTION, Nanostructures and Stirling Engines
Wasn't sure wether to put this one out there or not, but what the hell... First have a read of these excerpts from wikipedia ___________________________________________ Thermal properties Main article: Thermal properties of nanostructures All nanotubes are expected to be very good thermal conductors...

Thanx heepS
I would just like to take a moment to thank everyone on this forum for sharing their experiences. Whether it be directly with myself or other posts I’ve been reading. It is an extraordinarily helpful community, and is totally inspirational. Its a truly stirling effort bye everyone, and i carnot than...

Re: Choosing ALPHA Cycle Ratios
Bumpkin,
Yep, Alpha compression ratios is definitely one of my problems. I would love to be able to sit down and do as you have just done for me (thanks!!). Could you possibly direct me to a website or some literature that could assist me, in layman's terms, in learning how to do this?

Re: Choosing ALPHA Cycle Ratios
Geoff, Chastised I am (but I don’t mind). Cant help myself, The dreaming is the the trappings of my inquisitive nature. Have been reading lots of different things and trying to take it all in, it can get a bit confusing (and I can be a bit slow on the uptake). The view from the hill is a lot differe...

Re: "Hi" We are new here!
Hey Mick, Nice to see a fellow Aussie joining. Have recently joined myself and am about to start making an Alpha engine also. I've had some helpfull feedback from other members that might be worth a read. Also take some time to look through the forum, there's good stuff scattered throughout, or star...

Re: Choosing ALPHA Cycle Ratios
OK (hoping for some feedback here), Have been refining my Alpha design and is definitely becoming focused around minimising gap size and air boundary layer and maximising heat exchange. I'm worried that I might be creating too much resistance (back pressure) and dead space (gulp!). I am thinking for...

Re: expansion chamber/piston size
Hey RalphLear, What type of configuration are you considering for your LTD stirling, Alpha Beta Gamma? I'm on a steep learning curve, so i will try and help if i can. There are allot of posts on this forum, bye experienced stirling engine people, and it may just be a case of spending significant tim...

Re: EMISIVITY/ABSORBANCE – effects and possible applications
Bumpkin I reckon painting may still be worth trying on certain surfaces if not just for experimenting?? I think they use black surfaces on the plates and displacers in some of those hand temperature stirling engines to increase thermal transfer and regeneration properties. Water probably would have ...

EMISIVITY/ABSORBANCE – effects and possible applications..
EMISIVITY/ABSORBANCE – effects and possible applications in stirling engine design... OK, I’m about to step way out or my comfort zone with this topic. Is a materials emissivity a function that’s relative to 0deg kelvin (absolute zero)..(the higher the temp above zero, the greater the emission of ra...

Re: Large stirling engine
Hey vile_fly, Came across that video on youtube the other day and it caught my eye, am guessing it also caught yours. I'm wondering if you or any one, may have some more comprehensive information and solid test data about the engine, other than that of the makers general claims. Have had a bit of a ...

Re: Choosing ALPHA Cycle Ratios
Actually now i think about it Geoff, I'm probably wrong about the hybrid statement but am still intrigued by the close proximity of the heating and cooling ex-changers to each other and the hot piston.?? Bumkin, i see vile_fly mentioned that youtube link in a post on the topic called "Large sti...

Re: Choosing ALPHA Cycle Ratios
Although I have my own thoughts and experiences for discerning information, I have an open mind. I'm glad to see different ideas, and I don’t know enough to agree or disagree with anyone so far. I haven’t formed my own perspective as yet. There really are a lot of different ideas out there. I'd like...

Re: Choosing ALPHA Cycle Ratios
Bumkin, You say all you've made run is a little toy... well your one up on me mate. I've played with a few bought ones, but am still to make one (i'm working towards fixing this soon). Have to get my head around a few things before i can progress. Good luck with your rebuild, will be interested in h...

Re: Choosing ALPHA Cycle Ratios
Yea, have been reading his posts. that engine of his is a 'sweet ride'. Geoff wrote - "My Alpha on the other hand has a fixed phase angle (kinematic) of 90deg but a maximum volume ratio of 0.64. So that there is no misunderstanding I am refering to the ratio of the maximum volume swept by the d...
