Stirling powered toy car

Post by cbstirling2 »

I got a Meccano kit and made a toy Stirling car.
I was going to use gear reduction but I read gears rob power with friction. The rubber band drive has a nice feature as acting like a clutch as they stretch and spring back.

I also have used rubber bands to drive my water pumps on my hot air engines.
I have recently found some soft rubber that is used for sealing drums etc. Comes in 4mm up to 12mm. You glue it with super glues and it doesn't let go even when going around 20mm diameter pulleys under load.
Better than using rubber bands which seem to fall to bits after a couple of days.

I mainly use 3 mm round heat fused plastic belt, but I have used rubber bands, and O-Rings, with the O-Rings I have cut them and rejoined them with super glue. Another type of belt is the small square section belts used in some tape recorders etc.

HI Ian
I have tried to get 3 and 4mm in heat fused plastic belting (polyurethane I think) but with no luck in Australia.
Do you happen to know where it can be purchased, even on Ebay it is hard to find and expensive.
Maybe others are having trouble trying to find the stuff.

I get mine from R. R. Fisher ltd in Christchurch NZ, a metre or so isn't very costly, and I don't think the postage would be too much.
