My first can engine

Post by william »

I got interested in Stirling engines yesterday and surfed the web about them, and I recided to give the simple can engine a try.

It worked on the first try!

The differences between this and the original design are:
* Displacer is made of cellular plastic foam since I couldn't find anything better.
* The hole for the displacer rod (0.7 mm) is made of a MIG/MAG nozzle (0.8 mm)
* I coundn't find a power piston 'elbow' so I took a straight pipe (16->20 mm reduction) and glued it to the top of the pressure vessel.

Since I used the MIG/MAG nozzle I was able to fill the top with 2-3 cm of ice-water without risking getting water into the pressure vessel.

Nice engine. I have not had such luck with can type engines.
