I have built the tin can engine but cannot get it to run. I did not use the brass bolt that Darryl recommends but just put a hole through the cylinder top and used a piece of leather to seal around the connecting rod. I thought this would be less friction. Other reading I have done emphasizes tight sealing of the displacer cylinder. Maybe I have too much leakage around the connecting rod. Has anyone tried the design I have described? I have used a small Sterno can as the heat source. Is it possible to have the lower portion of the displacer cylinder too hot and have that result in an engine that won't run? I got the impression that the hotter the better. Your thoughts?
