Free Piston Stirling Engine Blade Atilla Style

Post by mmattil »

Hey all, I have gotten interested in Stirling engines recently and I particularly like the free piston style built by some youtubers like Blade Attila and Robert Murray Smith (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJsuwIUb0wE.)

These simple free piston engines give someone without the ability to machine parts a way to experiment. Anyway, scrolling through Amazon, I found this stainless steel time capsule that I thought would make a great cylinder for a free piston engine.

(https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GD ... prod_image)

It arrived today so I will try and post some pictures of what it looks like in person.

My plan is to keep one end intact as the hot end and replace the silicone gasket it came with with some ceramic wool or fireplace gasket and cut out the center of the other end (leaving the bolt ring intact) to install a diaphragm.

I need to get my hands on some stainless steel wool for the regenerator and I had thought about making a displacer out of stacked discs of ceramic wool held together and rigidized with sodium silicate. This might end up being too heavy or flexible so I will probably start with the best can I can find nearby. I haven't worked out most of the details yet, so if anyone has any suggestions or experience building one of these style engines I would love to hear about it.

I don't have any suggestions but am looking forward to seeing the progress on this engine.

Great find with the time capsule. It looks like it could make a great engine.
