Stir-Lec Opel Kadett series-hybrid car from 1969

Post by spinningmagnets »

In the interests of keeping this forum as the "first best reference" for Stirling links, I'm parking a link here to an article I found. Although the author is known for writing sensationalist click-bait stories (and I've heard rumors that he drinks), this particular one was somewhat useful.

Several attempts were made by Ford/GM/Chrysler to power a car directly with a V4 Beta Stirling, but acceleration was slow. Having a hybrid with electric drive solves the acceleration issue. In this prototype, it was found that at 30-MPH, the car could run continuously without depleting the battery. The Stirling Generator from Philips was being tested due to its very clean exhaust.
